Optical Assistant Apprentice

This vacancy is for an Apprentice Optical Assistant based in Coulsdon, Surrey.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to undertake valuable work experience within an Optical company supporting day to day tasks whilst gaining on the job qualifications.

As an Optical Assistant Apprentice, you will embark on an exciting journey to learn the ins and outs of the optical industry. This apprenticeship program offers hands–on training and educational opportunities to develop the skills necessary to assist optometrists and opticians in providing excellent eye care services to our clients. You will be an integral part of our team, contributing to a positive customer experience and ensuring smooth operations within our optical practice.

The duties within this role include:
  • Customer Service
    Provide exceptional customer service by greeting clients, scheduling appointments, answering phone calls, and addressing enquiries with professionalism and courtesy

  • Assistance in Eye Examinations
    Assist optometrists in conducting preliminary tests, such as visual acuity and intraocular pressure measurements.
    Gather patient medical histories, and prepare examination rooms for eye tests.

  • Frame Selection and Styling
    Help clients choose frames that suit their preferences, lifestyle, and prescription requirements. Provide guidance on lens options, coatings, and other optical products.

  • Optical Product Knowledge
    Develop a comprehensive understanding of various optical products, including lenses, frames, contact lenses, and accessories. Educate clients on the features and benefits of different products.

  • Order Processing and Inventory Management
    Manage inventory levels, replenish stock, organising stock and place orders for eyewear and related products. Ensure accuracy in order processing and maintain organized records of inventory transactions. Learn to use optical software systems for order entry and inventory tracking.

  • Assistance with Frame Adjustments and Repairs
    Learn basic frame adjustment techniques and assist with minor repairs and adjustments under the supervision of experienced optical professionals

  • Compliance and Quality Assurance
    Adhere to regulatory guidelines and industry standards to uphold the highest level of quality and safety in optical services. Follow established protocols for sanitation, hygiene, and infection control.

  • Professional Development
    Actively participate in training sessions, workshops, and educational programs to enhance knowledge and skills in the optical field. Stay updated on advancements in technology, products, and industry trends.

Training to be provided

  • Level 3 Optical Assistant Apprenticeship.

  • Functional Skills Level 2 in Functional skills Maths and Literacy, can be obtained on the course (if required).

  • Enhancement / challenge – how to develop ourselves.
