We have a fantastic opportunity for a Level 2 Apprentice Welder to join our team in September 2026, based at our site in Lostock, Bolton.

Vacancy Details Our apprenticeship scheme offers you the opportunity to develop the skills required to kick start your career, whilst working on large-scale, iconic structures.

Joining us on this apprenticeship will allow you to work towards the industry recognised Level 2 Welder Apprentice Standard.

The successful candidates will work in our factory, gaining hands-on experience in welding; working with structural steel. You will learn the role from our skilled welders who will be mentoring you throughout your journey.

To be eligible for this position, you will need GCSE Maths & English at a grade 3 or above. It is desirable to hold grade 4 in these subjects, however if you do not, you will need to sit functional skills (maths and/or English) alongside studies.

You must be at least 16 years old, and be available to travel to the training provider, Training 2000 Ltd, based in Blackburn, on block release for 4-weeks at the end of September 2026 through to end of October 2026. Following this, the apprenticeship training will continue at our site in Lostock.

You will also need to be available for the group residential induction week 1st-4th September 2026.

About Us Severfield is the largest structural steelwork Group in the UK and among the biggest in Europe. We have been involved in the UK's highest profile structural steel projects and we have the design and engineering capabilities to deliver the UK's largest, most complex projects.

Today, with multiple sites in the UK, Europe, and our joint venture in India, we have an annual capacity to produce around 300,000 tonnes of fabricated steelwork.

As part of your apprenticeship, you will be working with two material types and two welding processes. You will also learn:

Planning

Plan and prepare for the welding of plate, structural components before commencing work.

Materials

Check materials conform to the specified grades, dimensions and thicknesses.

Inspection

Inspect weld preparations, surface conditions and cleanliness.

Assembly and position of components

Assemble and position plate and structural components to be welded, including attachment of bracings, strong-backs, alignment aids, run-on and run-off tabs and backing materials (e.g. ceramic, metallic etc.).

Preparation to weld

Assemble equipment to be used in the preparation and welding of plate and structural components and check its performance and condition, including any component heating and monitoring equipment.

Adjusting and maintaining equipment

Adjust and maintain the equipment to be used during the welding of plate and structural components.

Technical specifications & drawings

Interpret technical specifications & drawings to establish detailed welding process controls, consumable selection, and dimensional limitations imposed to control distortion.

Welding techniques

Make the joints to specified dimensional accuracy using appropriate welding techniques.

Improvements

Identifying areas for improving the production process where possible through the monitoring of performance.

Monitoring parameters

Monitor associated parameters throughout the welding of plate and structural components (e.g. Preheat, Interpass Temperature, Heat Input).

Removing defects

Remove material using manual powered and non-powered hand tools, before and during welding to remove defects within the preparation and weld deposit.

Compliance

Visually inspect alignment and distortion of component and apply techniques to ensure compliance with specification.

Inspecting completed weld

Visually inspect completed weld and component geometry.

Hand tools

Remove and dress bracings, strong-backs, run-on/run-off tabs and alignment aids, and dress finished external weld surfaces using manual powered and non-powered hand tools.

Stock control

Monitor the use of consumables and adjust quantities issued, and return unused consumables for re-conditioning, re-use or disposal.

Working environment

Restore the work area and equipment to a safe and reliable condition on completion of welding including the remediation and recycling of bracings, strong-backs and alignment aids.

Finishing a job professionally

Complete production documentation and reporting at the appropriate stages of the work activity.

Training to be provided

The apprentice will be working towards completing the General Welder Standard which will include the following:?
