John Westhead, Business Manager for the Study Programmes.
Background – For the last 9 years I have worked in the welfare to work sector, starting out managing a team of people responsible for the New Deal contract across Blackpool, Lancaster and Morecambe. This involved taking long term unemployed people from ages 18-70 and helping them secure work and placement opportunities, during my time here I also managed a train to gain and apprenticeship contract as well as a Learn Direct contract spanning 9 sites.
More recently I have been managing the Work Programme contract which is the governments flagship welfare to work delivery which is designed to help the most hard to help long term unemployed people gain sustainable work.
Prior to that I have worked in many other sector’s and have managed an Estate Agency, worked in Stockbroking and also Logistics to name a few!
I live and was born in Blackpool (The little Las Vegas of the North!) I am married with one little boy aged 5 who certainly keeps me on my toes! I like to relax by spending as much family time as I can and enjoy taking time at home, going out and about around the Fylde coast and I coach the junior football team that my son plays for, although looking after 20 under 7’s is not that relaxing!
Likes – Man Utd! I have a season ticket for myself and my little boy so we are always out at the football which is great for us and also a relief for my wife as we are not under her feet talking about football!
Dislikes – Shopping, I hate it! Also I tend to have a problem with people who are not passionate about what they do, I am a great believer that if you are doing a job you should be passionate about it and want to do the best you can in whatever you do.
Future Aims – My aim for my department is to ensure that we are providing the best possible options for the young people and adults on our programme, I feel that we have a massive responsibility with the youth learners in that we are here to prepare them to enter either an apprenticeship, work or further education. I am hopeful that we will develop behaviours and attitudes to a level where they are ready to take on the next challenge in their lives as it is important to remember that a lot of the people we are dealing with are disadvantaged and not engaged with traditional learning
I believe that through inspirational and engaging programmes along with the natural passion dedication and determination that my team have we will be able to have a huge influence on the development of the local people and also the local community.
Most embarrassing moment – When I was working in Estate Agency I was showing a young couple around a property that was empty, I went in with the key and we started to look around and I heard a noise, I thought it must just be the wind but then the next minute a naked man started walking down the stairs towards us! It turns out that husband and wife who owned the house had been out the night before, had a row and the husband came back to their old property with a key he still had! For once I was lost for words!
