A mum-of-four is fulfilling her life’s ambition to become a plumber with the help of Training 2000.

Kelly, 33, had always dreamed of following her father’s career path, but it was only when her dad, Terry, died a few yeas ago that she decided to follow her heart and take a change of career from hairdressing.

Now, after completing her NVQ Level 2 in Plumbing, Kelly, from Leyland, is working with Stephen Turner Plumbing and Heating where she has progressed to a three-year Gas Engineering Advanced Apprenticeship with Training 2000.

“It was my dad’s last wish for me to get into the plumbing trade,” said Kelly, single mum to Alea, three, Lucy, six, James, 13, and 16-year-old Thomas.

“He had always drummed it into my head that that’s what I should do, but I never thought I could do it and it wasn’t until he died that I realised that it was the career for me. I went to lots of companies to try and get into plumbing and no-one helped. Then one day I saw some lads working on a house and plucked up the courage to ask for their advice on how I could get into the trade. From there I got in touch with Training 2000 and started my first programme. I love my work and it’s really pleasing to know I’m making my family proud.”

Kelly recently won an award for her commitment to the trade and was thrilled to be able to take her mum, who had been seriously ill, along to see her collect her trophy.

Kelly continued: “Mum had been on life support at Christmas and nearly died, so it was a great feeling taking her to the awards with me. My family always support me and keep me strong. I am due to finish my Apprenticeship next year and my ambition is to run a female plumbing firm in the future and without the help, support and dedicated learning from Training 2000, I wouldn’t be able to do that.”

Lindsay Dust, Career Development Advisor at Training 2000, added: “Kelly is a highly dedicated individual and has done exceptionally well to get ahead in a male-dominated sector. Our plumbing courses have been very popular recently and we hope that more females in the area will be inspired to get in touch.”
