Gulam, from Blackburn, started out at 16 doing an Engineering qualification at Lancashire University Technical College with the hopes of becoming an engineer, yet he soon discovered that his real passion lay in the daily variety of plumbing.
Gulam decided that he would like to work with his father, who runs his own plumbing and gas servicing business. He applied for an construction Apprenticeship in Plumbing, however tutors suggested that he gain a grounding in the basics first, on the Level 1 Full-Time Course.
Dave Vickers, Training 2000 Tutor explained;
“When Gulam progressed from the UTC we identified that he would benefit from completing a level 1 course to develop his practical skills and give him the confidence to help him progress into a construction Apprenticeship.”
Gulam said “The course really helped a lot, I was doing more complex things and having tasters on all the different aspects of plumbing and heating. I really enjoyed it.”
Now certain of what career path he wanted to take, Gulam was delighted when he was offered a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Plumbing and Heating. He plans to move onto a Level 3 Apprenticeship before gaining his gas safe accreditation.
“Gulam has been on the Apprenticeship programme for a few months and he has completed his bathroom installation assessment to a good standard. Due to his earlier training he is progressing well.”
Asked where he saw himself in ten years, Gulam said;
“I like the idea of being a business man, so I can imagine that I will be working with my dad and then taking over the business when he retires. My little brother is currently studying at Lancashire UTC and wants to follow in my footsteps, so we will run the business together.”
