LOCAL PUPILS JOIN IN THE NATIONAL VQ DAY CELEBRATIONS AT TRAINING 2000 July 2009

LOCAL PUPILS JOIN IN THE NATIONAL VQ DAY CELEBRATIONS AT TRAINING 2000 July 2009 A group of year eight pupils from Darwen Vale High School have been given the opportunity to increase their understanding of vocational qualifications by experiencing a day at Blackburn based training provider Training 2000. The taster day was set up to celebrate national VQ day.

VQ Day aims to highlight the benefits of gaining vocational qualifications as an alternative or addition to traditional educational routes. The day celebrated the millions of individuals that gain vocational qualifications every year as a stepping stone to further study, better jobs and enhanced skills

The group of 12-13 year olds were shown how vocational study provides recognised qualifications, leads to better jobs and can be a progression route into further education or university.

Three interactive workshops were delivered to the pupils, giving them an insight into the Engineering, Construction and Dental industries and providing the young people with information on post-16 learning and vocational qualifications.

Marilyn Pilkington, 14-19 Engagement Manager at Training 2000, said: “It was great to have pupils with us from Darwen Vale High School, an Engineering college and extended school. It is vital that young people are aware of all the routes that are open to them when leaving school and making career choices. National VQ day coincides with our end of year celebrations, and gives us a great opportunity to showcase our outstanding Apprenticeship achievements.”

Claire Ward, Head of Year Eight at Darwen Vale High School said: “The pupils have really enjoyed the wide range of activities that they’ve been able to do today. The tutors have made it fun for them and they’ve been intrigued by the number of different things they’ve been able to have a go at. A lot of female pupils chose to come along today and they’ve been really pleased to see some ex-Darwen Vale High School female pupils who are now apprentices at Training 2000 – it makes them realise that it’s a real option for them.”
