JADE FIGURES OUT HER FUTURE April 2009
Accrington teenager Jade Ryan has given her future a makeover after completing the New Directions programme at Training 2000. Unhappy at school and unsure of her future, Jade began the programme to figure out her future career. Two years later and Jade is working full-time, studying for her Apprenticeship and being a mum to 14 month old Mackenzie.
The New Directions programme, delivered by Training 2000, work with schools across Lancashire, focusing on young people who are struggling to engage with education and are in danger of leaving school prematurely.
Initially joining Accrington based beauticians ‘A Beautiful Figure’ during her work experience placement, Jade’s interest in pursuing a career in beauty developed. Joining Training 2000’s New Directions programme, Jade began combining three days at school with three days working.
Shortly after commencing work, Jade discovered she was pregnant. Determined it would not stop her developing her future, and keen to continue working at the beauticians, Jade attended school and worked throughout her pregnancy. Her dedication and enthusiasm shone through, working within days of giving birth and taking only three weeks maternity leave!
Jade, 17, comments: “I wasn’t the best student at school, I found classroom based learning difficult to get to grips with and lost concentration quite quickly. The opportunity the New Directions course gave me has totally changed my life, and I’m really grateful to everyone who has helped me along the way.”
Returning to school after giving birth, Jade achieved four GCSEs and now attends Blackburn College, studying for her NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship in Beauty Therapy, with plans to continue studying next year for her Level 3 qualification.
Yvonne Haddock, owner of ‘A Beautiful Figure’ said: “Jade is an inspiration to all young people, she has shown dedication and commitment throughout her time working here and I am very proud of her, she is a remarkable young woman.”
Jade concludes: “Juggling everything is hard sometimes but I love my job and enjoy working towards my Apprenticeship. Ultimately I want to provide a good future for myself and Mackenzie and working at ‘A Beautiful Figure’ has helped me focus on my studies and succeed.”
