DRIVING HOME THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY April 2009

DRIVING HOME THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY April 2009 Local learners ‘put the wheels in motion’ this week, as they swapped the classroom for the open road to take part in the ‘Wasted Lives’ initiative, developed to highlight the importance of road safety and responsible driving ahead of many of them starting to learn to drive.

Almost 150 apprentices from Training 2000 attended the course at Hutton Police Headquarters; covering drink driving issues, road safety, the impact of drug abuse, along with seeing first hand the devastating implications on family and friends after losing someone involved in a road traffic accident.

The course, delivered by Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety contributes to one of Training 2000’s core objectives in achieving the Governments ‘Every Child Matters’ programme, focusing on being healthy, staying safe, enjoying and achieving, making a positive contribution and achieving economic well-being.

Neil Burrows, Engineering Centre Manager at Training 2000 said: “With one in three new drivers crashing within the first two years of passing their test, these courses are essential in preparing new and soon-to-be young drivers about the risks associated with getting behind the wheel.

“So many young people get caught up in the excitement of learning to drive and with added peer pressures many lose sight of the all too real dangers. We hope this course will stay in their minds and remind them of the dangers next time they get in the car.”

Julie Debicka from Lancashire Partnership against Crime commented: “The ‘Wasted Lives’ programme has developed steadily over the years with thousands of young people in the county completing the course. The more young people we inform the bigger impact it will have, the more lives we will be able to save.”
