Going for Gold at the Soccer Dome Olympics March 09 Celebrations were at the top of the agenda this week for local training providers Training 2000 and North Lancs Training Group (NLTG) as around sixty 16-18 year olds marked the completion of the Smart Form course by competing in an Olympic Games Tournament at Blackburn’s Soccer Dome.

The Smart Form energiser course aimed at Lancashire’s young people who are in danger of not staying in education is designed to stimulate young people’s interest in education and their future careers through a range of activities designed to boost confidence and employability skills.

Funded by the Young People’s Service and working with Connexions, the course has run for six weeks, and has highlighted the importance of skills, providing young people with a focus for the future.

The games were held to recognise the participant’s achievements, as during the course, all the young people have successfully completed a range of activities and gained AQA recognised qualifications in skills including first aid, team working and furniture making.

The games where a huge success and a good time was had by all. Team from both providers took part in a football and cricket knock out. Teams from training 2000 from Pendle and Rossendale won both finals!

Other activities also took place on the day including tug of war, keepy ups and goal shooter.

The event concluded with an awards ceremony celebrating the outstanding achievements made by individuals who have shown progression throughout the course with trophies and certificates.

Nicola Melcalfe, New Direction Co-ordinator at Training 2000 said: “Everyone on the Smart Form course has progressed dramatically over the last 3 months and they should all be very proud of their achievements. Many of the learners have found new skills and are keen to continue and develop these skills further over the coming months, which is a great result.”

Stephanie Chessman, 16, from Haslingden said,
“I enjoyed being on Smart Form a lot and liked not being in big groups as I got to know everyone. It was better than college”.
