New Directions lead to success for Lancashire pupils - July 2008

New Directions lead to success for Lancashire pupils - July 2008 Pupils from schools in Lancashire are celebrating after having their achievements recognised and rewarded at the Training 2000 New Directions Awards Evening in Nelson.

The aim of the evening was to celebrate the success of these young people who were nominated as a result of their hard work, dedication and commitment to succeed. The pupils who won achievement awards for their work whilst on the Extended Work Experience programme were Richard Briggs who worked at Barlick Landscaping and Decking Services, Robert Scott who worked at D&D Motors, Megan Tomlinson who worked at Fairfield Children Centre, Naomi Ramsbottom who worked at St Aidens Primary School and Jade Louise Ryan who worked at A Beautiful Figure. Kirsty Campbell from Blessed Trinity RC College in Burnley received an Outstanding Achievement Award.

New Directions is a work-based learning option for 14 – 16 year olds who may not achieve their full potential in the classroom and provides an alternative to the year 10 and year 11 curriculum. Learners can either choose a work placement with a local employer whilst working towards a recognised qualification; they can join the Carousel project at the Training 2000 workshop where they get a taster in a variety of topics including electronics, joinery and motor vehicle, or they can join the Year 11 project which is run by Training 2000 in conjunction with local schools and offers a combination of basic skills, personal and social development and a work placement for the learner.

Lisa Bloomfield, Foundation Programmes Director at Training 2000 said, ‘We are very proud of the relationships we have built at Training 2000 with local schools. New Directions is ideal for young people in years 10 and 11 who may not be in a position to achieve their full potential in a classroom environment. I congratulate all the pupils who have worked so hard to win an Outstanding Achievement Award here tonight – they are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and the support we receive from the schools and local employers who are involved.’
