Howzat! - Two local learning providers raise money for Cancer Research July 08

Two local learning providers, Training 2000 and North Lancs Training Group have launched a joint fund-raising initiative to try to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

The Social Committees at both training organisations have set themselves a target to raise £20,000 by the end of this year. With this in mind they have arranged a series of events which will take place between June and December, the first of which took place last Friday when they held a cricket match and netball tournament for staff from both organisations at Enfield Cricket Club, Accrington. Despite the unseasonal wintry conditions they raised a very impressive £1300, a great start to achieving their target.

Other events that are planned include a Coast to Coast bike ride on August bank holiday weekend where groups of staff from both companies will cycle for 3 days covering a staggering 140 miles from Whitehaven on the west coast over hill and dale to Newcastle-upon-Tyne on the east coast, one of the most popular and well-known cycle routes in the country. They also plan to hold a staff quiz night at Rishton Golf Club in September, a Halloween party in October at Rishton Conservative Club and a Charity Ball at Mytton Fold Hotel in November.

Michael Hunt, Operations Director at Training 2000 said ‘ Despite the weather all the staff involved had a great time at the Cricket match and Netball tournament and we are delighted to have kick-started our fund-raising campaign by raising such a large amount of money. We hope that the other events we have planned will be just as well supported so that we can achieve our target of raising £20,000 by the end of this year for such a worthy cause as Cancer Research UK’
Chris Sherratt, Quality Improvement/Support Officer at North Lancs Training Group added, ‘The Cricket & Netball event was an excellent kick start to work towards achieving our target and it was good to see staff from both providers giving up their spare time to help in raising money for a worthwhile cause. Although the weather was poor on the night, NLTG triumphed in both matches and received a Challenge Trophy which was presented by the Enfield CC professional Gary Brent. ’
Cancer Research UK’s 4250 scientists, doctors and nurses across the UK are
committed to understanding, preventing and treating cancer. Through their work, the charity hopes to improve survival rates, ensuring that more families stay together for longer.

Helen Kitchen, Area Volunteer Manager at Cancer Research UK said, "We are delighted that Training 2000 and North Lancs Training Group have joined together to support Cancer Research UK. Their ambitious fundraising events will not only be fun for all their employees but will also raise vital funds for the work of Cancer Research UK."
